The drawings were made during an April 2015 residency at the Catwalk Institute in Catskill, NY. They evoke the color of the Hudson River Valley light as it changes throughout the day. Dawn, day, dusk and night are each represented by a ground color made through the application of several washes of transparent color. Using a hand made stencil the central image of either the sunwheel or double moon is also painted in a transparent wash. The final image is either a diamond or a set of five concentric circles. These geometric shapes are formed through the application of a repeated sequence of opaque “beads” of color. The success of this series depends on color gradations and their ability to produce an optical pulsation.
